APPLYING VENEER TO BOX TOP

With the box assembled it is now time to apply the veneer to the top of the box.

Take the inlaid veneer for the top, and center it on the box, marking the edges. Ensure the measurement from the side of the box is equal on every side.

As in the earlier blog, applying wood inlay veneer to the side panel, apply a coat of PVA glue to the surface of the box, and the under side of the top wood inlay and allow to dry. Apply a second coat to both surfaces and again allow to dry.

With a hot iron, iron the inlaid veneer, continuously moving the iron so as not to burn the wood. Ensure the inlaid veneer is totally adhered to the surface with no bubbles or gaps around the edges.

Cut strips of veneer for a border around the picture I have used 1/8" strips of silver ash. Miter the corners and glue to the lid affixing with painters tape until the glue is dry.

With a scraper or small plain make surface flush, continue around the box.

Then cut strips of Western Australian Jarrah, Slightly wider than the remaining edge. Miter the corners and glue to the top of the box. Continue around the box until complete. Using a scraper or hand plain level until flush.

Trim all the edges, at this stage I sand the entire box and apply a cote of oil finish.
