CELTIC SHARK, INLAID WOOD BOX POST VI

To frame the wood inlaid panel, I cut strips of veneer, and using a block of wood with a 1/8" groove routed into it., and trim with a small plain, this ensures all strips are exactly the same width.

Miter one corner at 45%.

Measure and mark to length.

Using an improvised miter box, I miter the other end. If anyone out in eland has a better way of doing this process, I'd love to hear from them as the results i'm getting are not great.

Glue the first piece into position, and secure with painters tape.

Continue working around the four sides, but at this stage I don't glue the other three sides.

Next glue in the veneer on the opposite side, I do this as it is easier to make the individual sides flush, without contending with the cross grain at the corners.

With the box held securely, and using a hand plain or scraper, I trim the veneer until flush.

Next glue and secure the other two sides.

Trim using a plane or scraper.

Tidy up with a scraper and sandpaper.

Select the veneer for the outside of the lid.

Set the marking gauge to the required depth.

Lightly scribe along the veneer until cut.

Repeat until enough veneer is cut to cover the remaining top area.

Using the same process as above I complete the veneered lid.

Using scraper, plane and sanding I finish cleaning up the lid.

Wiping over with a damp cloth, gives a good indication of the finished item.
