PELICAN MARQUETRY BOX NO II Post III

PELICAN MARQUETRY BOX NO II Post III

Again I apologies for being a bit slack of recent, things sometimes get out of control. I have been to the shed a few times, but not for long, and I haven't had time to think about documenting what I have been doing. For those of you who follow me on instagram (holmesp06) I have been posting some pics.

Over the last week our youngest son paid us a surprise visit, which was a great surprise and very enjoyable. I also had a problem with my little Toyota Prius,

                         SAD PRIUS                HAPPY PRIUS
It's hard to tell the difference between a happy Prius and a sad Prius, Its not until you check you bank account that you can tell the difference, Three and a half thousand dollars and a week and a half to supply a new HV battery, the car has only done just over 100,000 kilometers. The car is eight years old, the battery has a eight year or 160,000 kilometer warranty, and TOYOTA won't even discuss the matter, I was going to purchase a new Prius Station Wagon, so it's a bit easier on my wife putting the wheelchair in and out of the car, but I guess Toyota have lost that sale. Enough winging.

The Box

I've knocked up a very quick MDF box blank, with a three ply bottom.

I ran a bead of super glue around the join in the top, then scraped the surface smooth.

Making sure the top is completely level, any bumps or irregularities will affect the finish of the veneer.

Apply two cotes of PVA glue to the top of the box and the reverse side of the marquetry panel for the top, allowing the glue to dry between cotes.

When the PVA glue is dry, position the marquetry on the box and using a hot iron lightly tack the center into place, at this stage I don't wont the edges to be stuck down hard, as it makes it to difficult to trim and remove the wast.

Cover the edges of the top with low adhesive tape,

and using my cutting gauge set to the correct depth, scribe around the edges.

Then remove the wast.

Then with the hot iron completely secure the marquetry to the top.

Select a suitable veneer for the border.

Cut the pieces and glue into position.

And secure using tape.

Allow to dry.

Then with the cutting gauge set, cut around the edge as before.

Remove the wast.

Trim with a scraper.

And sand smooth.

The Marquetry for the sides

Select the veneer to be used for the sides of the box.

Print out the pattern.

Cut the veneer for the sides.

Tape both sides of the veneer.

Measure and mark the front of the veneer.

Cut out and glue the pattern to the veneer.

Select a starting point, and attach the inlay veneer to the back.

Cut out the piece as previously described.

Shade the leaf.

Continue around the pattern.
