ROSE WREATH Marquetry box Project 0007 Post III
Back to work or probably should say play, all the real life chores out of the way, old sick mum is doing ok. The next section I did over the past few days as and when time permitted, it started as an idea I wanted to try for a future project, but it has turned out so well I have decided to combine it with the rose I did as a trial using the Brother 110 Scan and Cut printer, maybe is should be called the trial project.
I started with this drawing of a simple rose wreath, I think I got it out of an old book, but i'm not shore of it's origins, it's one of those pictures I see and think one day I'd like to try and do that, so I tear it out and put it aside until one day comes along.
I printed it out, made some adjustments until I came up with something I could manage.
I'm using some scrap pieces of veneer, when I do the final piece I want to use a dark timber for the background, however light timber is ok for the test piece.
I cut out the pattern and glued it directly to the veneer, normally I would cover the veneer with painters tape and glue the pattern to the tape, just want to try something different.
I am applying a couple of cotes of PVA glue to the reverse side of the marquetry again as a test, I hope it will strengthen the veneer and I wont need to tape the reverse side as I usually do.
Select the inlay veneer and start cutting.
Doing the shading with the gas soldering iron as I go.
Glue the inlay into position.
Tapping the inlay piece into position with a small hammer, couses the veneer to spread and makes a tighter fit.
Working out where to shade the inlay piece.
When the inlay has been finished, spray the piece with water and allow to soak in.
Remove the pattern with a scraper of some sort. You probably noticed that I finished up taping the reverse of the marquetry piece as the PVA glue wasn't holding the veneer together as I had hoped, might have worked.
That's the panel complete, thanks for visiting, you can email me holmesp06@gmail.com also by going to the previous projects page you can catch up on all the previous jobs I have covered.
