PELICAN MARQUETRY BOX NO II Post IV

PELICAN MARQUETRY BOX NO II Post IV

Life doesn't seam to want me to spend time in the workshop at the moment. The weather has finally turned really nice, Spring is here. Another day without rain and the painter will be able to paint the pool and I might be able to get back the the hydro therapy rehab exercises.

I did spend some time in the shed today, (when I say today I mean the day before yesterday, but today I got some time to type it up today), but only managed to complete the marquetry for the side panels, below i'll just show the pics, I don't think they need to much commentary.

By lightly tapping with a small hammer the veneer will spread and fill any gaps, not that there are many using the method of marquetry.

Remove all the tape.

I have had a couple of emails asking me to explain why I carry out the next process, I think in the above photo, it is quite clear that the inlaid section in about 1/32" proud of the veneer. This occurs because of the thickness of the tape and the paper the pattern is printed on.
It would be quite easy to scrape and sand this smooth, however if I were to do this I would loose the shading effect on the leaves.

To overcome this I use a chisel and press down on the veneer, working around the entire pattern. This is why I use PVA glue to secure the inlays instead of the more common and much quicker method of super glue. The PVA glue remains more pliable unlike super glue which goes very hard and brittle not allowing the veneer to be pressed down.

Now the reverse of the pattern is standing proud, this is then easily scraped and sanded smooth.

Leaving the front of the veneer flush and only needing a light sand to clean it up.

Next glue the marquetry to the sides of the box.
