TRIAL II

Last post I finished off with the butterfly wing inlaid.

I will start by taking the wing piece I put aside earlier.

Peel the pattern and tape off the surface,

and reapply it to the top of the wing.

Then place the veneer behind the inlaid wing.

Securely tape the veneer into position.

Next drill a pilot pole for the scroll saw blade at an angle approximately double that of the scroll saw table, this will hide the entry point of the drill.

Cut around the pattern in a clockwise direction.

Glue the inlay piece into position.

From here I show all pictures with only minimal commentary, I'd suggest you look at the photos and then practice on some scrap material, after two or three attempts the process becomes quite routine.

Using a scraper and sandpaper clean up both sides of the marquetry.

Wash the front of the marquetry.

I applied a couple of cotes of Oil Sealer to protect the surface of the marquetry.

I think it should work quite well on the lid of the boxes, but being for small girls I might make the boxes out of a light coloured wood and have the butterfly in dark wood, I've got time to think about that before I'll be able to get to work on them.
